Our purpose

Help people understand who represents their community, what they decide, and when they can vote. CivicPublic is independent of governments, parties and campaigns. We do not endorse or rank candidates.

Sources and context

Profiles distinguish official records, candidate statements, community sources and independent reporting. Summaries link to the original source and check date. An attributed statement is not an independently verified achievement.

Votes and projects

Individual positions appear only when the source names the person and vote. Moving or seconding a motion, adopting a decision and completing a project are separate facts. A vote on one bill stage does not describe all of a person’s beliefs. Absences and declared conflicts are treated separately.

Equal coverage

Each published election guide uses the same profile categories and evidence standard for every candidate, in alphabetical order. Officeholders and election candidates are labelled separately. A newcomer’s lack of council voting history does not count against them.

AI and corrections

AI can assist with extraction and summaries. Substantive AI proposals need an editor’s approval. Evidence questions search published records; they do not conduct new web research. Published corrections retain their source, reason and change history.

Photographs and public information

Portraits identify people in their profiles and link to the original supplying publisher. Public visibility is not a blanket reuse licence. Landmark photographs retain credits and reuse terms. We do not generate faces or bypass access controls. Private messages and political profiling of residents are excluded.

Coverage and requests

Coverage varies by place and period. Geographic directories do not mean every council has been researched. See available collections.
